We turned walls, nooks, and soffits into surfaces that help bring in diffused natural light through a skylight that divides the worship hall from an auxiliary building. Our design for a high-end restaurant in Taichung has officially recveived a building permit and urban design review approval. Its pared down design reflects the holistic philosophy of our client’s culinary vision, merging sophistication with simplicity. 🍽✨ The journey to this milestone has been filled with dedication and creativity, and we can’t wait to bring this unique dining experience to life in the heart of Taichung’s Central Park!

As 2023 comes to an end, we’d like to share the projects and milestones accomplished at MIIM Office for Architecture this year:
We started the year on a high note when we won a competition to design a holiday villa on Penghu Island, an offshore island of Taiwan. Our design takes advantage of local materials and know-how, and with abundant wind and sun throughout the year, the house aims to be carbon neutral within its first year.
This year we finally received building permit approval for a new standalone building restaurant, bakery, and hip hangout near Central Park in Taichung. As a building, it complements the various pavilions throughout the site as well as the upcoming Cultural Center by SANAA at the northern end of the park, and Kengo Kuma’s cultural center for Feng Chia University next door. Within the same neighborhood we are also designing a multigenerational family home. The challenge is to maximize access to nature in a vertical urban context and draw in Taichung’s exuberant sunshine while keeping out the summer heat.
We have been commissioned by a prominent Hakka culinary family in Taiwan to design a restaurant in Taichung that features a modern take on Hakka cuisine. Our design reinterprets iconic traditional motifs as contemporary design sensibilities without abandoning the core principles of Hakka cuisine. Back in Taipei, we are putting the finishing touches on a major interior design project for a biotech firm in Taipei.
In collaboration with our long-time friends NICE&WISE Architects of Bratislava, we developed a competition proposal for a new urban quarter for the city of Trnava in Slovakia. MIIM was invited to participate in two exhibitions this year: the 100 Year Masterplan for Seoul, as part of this year’s Seoul Biennale for Architecture and Urbanism, and the 17th Singapore Archifest, titled Interim: Acts of Adaptation.
In addition to designing, MIIM’s creative director Min Ter Lim is leading a year-long research studio at National Cheng Kung University on adaptive reuse of a historical building in the making of a modern museum space.

Here’s the latest look at the public Shueipingwun park and parking (水萍塭) MIIM designed in partnership with Team Architects Partnership (群甡聯合建築師事務所) in the heart of Tainan City, Taiwan. The underground parking lot is completed and open to the public. The above-ground landscape construction is in progress. Occupying one of the largest city blocks in an area known for dense small plots, the park is seamlessly woven into the cultural and economic fabric of historic Tainan.

❄️As 2022 draws to an end, here are some highlights we’d like to share with you from this year❄️

🎄In Taichung City we designed a new-build 5-storey high-end restaurant/bakery, which is expected to start construction early next year. Our holiday image is a sneak peek! The building is located at the southern gateway of a park designed by Swiss architect Philippe Rahm Architectes and French landscape architects Mosbach Paysagistes. It complements the various pavilions throughout the site as well as the upcoming Cultural Center by SANAA at the northern end of the park.

⭐️Earlier this year, construction was completed on a sales center that included showrooms and exhibition areas with a bookstore and café. Four projects are currently under construction, ranging from a single-family home extension to a large six-floor production center for a printing company. We also received a construction permit for an academic building on a high school campus. The construction of our shoe production and automation R&D center in Vietnam continues.

🎄We were invited to showcase speculative work at two exhibitions in Seoul, South Korea. The first, titled Future Architecture, was held at Total Museum of Contemporary Art. We were inspired by artist Nam June Paik’s interpretation of the ephemeral nature of the “electronic superhighway,” a term he coined to describe humanity’s increasing dependence on digital culture. We developed a 4.5m high video projection that presented solar pathway in a completely novel format. The other exhibition is our 2nd appearance at the Seoul Biennale for Architecture and Urbanism. Our proposal for a climate-resilient approach to masterplanning Seoul was one of the winners selected to be presented at next year’s Biennale.

⭐️As we recently announced, we were selected as a finalist in the Argo Island Villa International Design Competition. Lastly, we’re honored to mention that our “House with 3 Facades” in Yilan won the 2022 iF Design Award’s Best Architecture Design in the Residential category. The same project was also a Platinum Winner of the Muse Design Awards 2021.

Our longest running architecture project to date is also our smallest! Extra attention to detail needed due to us adding new volume to an existing disused structure. The scaffold safety nets give it a lovely green afternoon glow.

Throwback Thursday: Our design for a tropical fore

Throwback Thursday: Our design for a tropical forest housing unit targeted towards mountain aborigines in Malaysia. Composed entirely of dry-mount joints and flatpack panels, they can be easily transportable via mountain trails or small trucks. Components are easily built, dismantled, and rebuilt, or expanded as inhabitants grow. Multiple design combinations allow each family to tailor their dwelling to their various needs.

Snapshots from the circular design workshop for finalists of the Villa Competition in Qingwan, Penghu. The goal was to develop viable building material from local environmental pollutants. Dry details will allow these to eventually be part of the domestic construction products pool. Click in for some detailed descriptions.

1. For hundreds of years, locals dry-stacked coral rocks into walls that provided protection for homes, crops, and livestock from the windswept climate. Because they were porous, air could still percolate through to create comfortable breezy microclimates on the leeward side. No mortar necessary thanks to the its weight and rough texture.

2. The dry stacks were ideal for simple adobe homes. Pictured here is a traditional kiln used to process lime from the calcium carbonate in the coral rocks. Industrial methods elsewhere have rendered these obsolete. Its walls are mixed with basalt boulders that are abundant in Penghu.

3. We played with a cement-less slurry developed by researchers at Chengkung University, also derived from coral rock quicklime mixed with industrial slag, calcium silicate, and other industrial byproduct waste.

4. Sample brick, detail. Had to work very hard to refrain from eating these rice-krispies lookalikes.

5. Wall in-progress. The foundation is 3D-printed with slurry derived from a similar recipe mix.

We were presented with mountains of free and abundant raw material: coral rocks and oyster shell discards, and we'll be turning them into some cool new building material here. 🧱

MIIM is honored to be shortlisted in the Argo Isla

MIIM is honored to be shortlisted in the Argo Island Villa International Design Competition (青灣山城VILLA國際競圖). The teams are tasked with creating eco-friendly yet climate-resilient architecture in the form of a vacation villa, based on circular design principles and with minimal impact on the coastal environment.

The site in Penghu (also known as the Pescadores) Islands has beautiful seascape views, a unique basalt landscape, rich and diversified vegetation, and proximity to historical landmarks.

We will kick off Stage 2 of the competition with a two-day workshop in Penghu, starting tomorrow. Stay tuned for photos and updates as we explore unique local building materials such as coral stone and oyster shells, and try our hand at mixing and constructing with C-Slurry, a concrete-like circular building material made from 100% recycled industrial waste!
