MIIM has been awarded Third Prize for our research work on resilient coastal development in Tongyeong, South Korea. Our scheme rejected a traditional monolithic top-down design. Instead we developed a method to construct buildings on modified VLFS floating pontoon structures that house museums, galleries, tourist amenities, and performance centers. Instead of a single monolithic urban area, our plan distributes the tourist programs to 41 inhabited and 110 uninhabited islands within the archipelago at the center of Hallyeohaesang Marine National Park. Twice a year, they “return” to Tongyeong to form an entire dock district to house annual cultural events, and also to protect the district against harsh seasonal storms.
